Doors, painting and case

Jake took vacation yesterday so we decided to make it a late night and see what we could get done. We didn't leave the house until after 1. We got up this morning to pick up Kevin from the airport at 7. Needless to say we are both way tired. I was going to post a little when I got home last night but Jake talked me out of it and we decided to go to sleep instead.
So yesterday I had big plans of getting a lot done. Things don't always turn out the way we plan them that is for sure.
I called the lumber company who is supposed to be building our exterior doors and have base and case delivered. Got on the phone with them and they said that the base and case were just waiting for a truck so that they could load and deliver them. Here is where the not so great news comes in.....looks like we won't have exterior doors until the middle of next week. Can't say that I am happy about that as I don't think that the house is super secure right now and we will be moving in this weekend. Nothing I can do to change it but I thought I would share. So I am a little nervous about staying there with no real secure locks on the doors. Maybe we could borrow someones big dog or something for a couple of days...
Jake and Kevin worked on getting doors hung yesterday before I got there. I had E so I couldn't get an early start with them. When I got there I worked on staining more of the counter top until E wouldn't let me work anymore. I had to make arrangements for someone to watch him because we are down to crunch time and I really needed to put in some work where I could. Thank you Mary and Erin for saving my life these last few weeks!!!
Kevin had to get to the airport so they didn't finish doors so I helped Jake finish that when he got back. Can I just tell you how hard it is hanging doors. It is not a fast project and took forever to make sure that everything was aligned just so and that we would be able to live with them if they weren't perfect. Not something I want to do again anytime soon!!!

The doors look great and even though they took forever I am happy that we got them in....eventually. They still need to be painted but we have to hang doors, case and base all before carpet gets laid on Friday so painting all of those things really isn't a priority since we can go back and take our time and do them the way we want them.
Today Jake worked on hanging case. At first it was taking forever so I thought of an idea to just go around and measure all the doors for just the side panels and then we could do the tops of them later if we had time. So me and Jake went around and measured all the doors. Kevin was scraping up sub flooring in all the random spots that we have just not really had time to worry about but that needs to be done before carpet on Friday so that helped a ton while me and Jake worked on case. So after all the measurements we went down and started cutting and labeling each one so that we knew where it was going to go. After that Jake worked on getting them all nailed into the right doors.

While Jake hung the case Kevin and I started painting. He was doing the primer and I was doing the color that is going throughout the whole house. We have little nicks and stuff in the walls but Jake said that we could just go back later and take care of the random spots. I was okay with that because we needed to get a move on with painting. I really don't want to paint when all of our stuff is in and carpet is down and we have to be even more careful about not having any accidents. So we got done with the whole top floor except for E's room. He had a lot of paint on it from the previous tenants so Kevin went and scrubbed the walls with water and a sander and it looks like most of it came off so that is a good thing because I don't know how many coats of primer it would have taken to get all of it hidden well enough that you wouldn't see it through the paint.

So the pictures aren't great but I am trying to paint and take pictures in between. It isn't the easiest thing and I didn't want to spend a lot of time on pictures because I wanted to make sure I got all the painting done. I have to say I don't mind painting a room or two but painting a whole house or even right now a half of a house isn't easy and not something I look forward to when we finish the basement. My body is stiff. And I don't even want to get started on how my hands feel. BUT it feels great that we got so much done today and that it just gets us that much closer to being done....at least on one level.
The plan tomorrow is finish up painting. Start and finish laying the base around the whole top level. Chris should also be coming to finish up all the little touches on the kitchen. I can't wait to finally have that done. I am not looking forward to being Chris though because there are a few glitches that need to be worked out.
I also think that the heating and air guys are supposed to come back and charge the A/C unit so that the air conditioner can start working. I am not sure yet if that is going to happen but I will cross my fingers and see.
Shelving might also be put up in closets if there is time.

  1. I don't envy you guys. It is a lot of work! I remember doing it with this house...for months and months...painting and painting and painting with 4 kids and no AC. Blech. Never wanted to see another paintbrush again! And then we had to move and I had nothing packed. It was pretty much a nightmare...so I feel bad for you, but it will be worth it when you're done! Good luck this weekend.
